AFRODITA strengthens doctoral training in reproductive diagnostics through its Training School in Italy
26-03-2026
From 23rd to 26th March 2026, the AFRODITA Initial Training School 2 was held at the University of Teramo, and the company Diatech Pharmacogenetics (Jesi, Italy), where the 15 Doctoral Candidates (DCs) took part in an intensive programme focused on the latest advances in reproductive diagnostics. Over four days, DCs combined theoretical sessions with practical laboratory training, exploring cutting-edge techniques in microscopy, genomics, and artificial intelligence (AI) applied to reproductive biology. Key activities included workshops on embryonic micromanipulation, advanced imaging using confocal and electron microscopy, and seminars on omics technologies and AI-driven diagnostic approaches. A central feature of this Training School was its strong hands-on component. DCs worked in small groups with specialised equipment, gaining direct experience in advanced imaging techniques and biological sample processing.
The programme also included dedicated sessions where the DCs presented updates on their individual research projects, fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration within the AFRODITA consortium. In parallel, a Supervisory Board meeting was held to review the project’s progress and discuss upcoming activities.
The Training School concluded with a visit to Diatech Pharmacogenetics, offering participants valuable insight into how scientific research is translated into clinical and diagnostic applications. The visit featured expert lectures, a company tour, and practical sessions on technologies used in routine patient testing.
This Training School provided a unique opportunity to strengthen both technical and transferable skills, while bridging academic research and industry. The programme concluded with a cultural visit to the Museum of Ceramics in Castelli, where AFRODITA members explored the region’s rich artistic heritage and its long-standing tradition of handcrafted majolica. This final activity, together with the opportunity to experience Italian culture and cuisine, offered a valuable social dimension to the event. The AFRODITA consortium would like to thank all contributors and participants for their active engagement in making this event a highly enriching experience.
